

The year 1972 was the official start of the kennel when Henrique decided to organise the breeding of Podengos Altino was already using Podengos for hunting. The owners of "de Veiros" kennel are Altino Passadinhas, Henrique Passadinhas and Nuno Passadinhas, father, son and grandson respectively - three generations of Podengo breeders! An adaptable, happy dog, the Podengo thrives indoors or out, in heat or in snow and is equally at ease in all diverse circumstances. Today, the Podengo has succeeded in claiming its place in Portugal and in the world, thanks to numerous hunters and breeders.īreeding Podengos is a passion because they are intelligent, healthy, rustic, lively and friendly dogs. The maintenance of the ancient characteristics with no need of great changes proves that the Podengo perfectly fulfils the objectives of its owner thanks to its physical and moral qualities. The medium Podengo is among all the three sizes, the one where the genetic patrimony is more perfectly stabilized, allowing dogs that are constant in type, colour and temperament, within the guidelines described in the photos and books of the old times. The Medio, or medium-sized, is a popular dog used for rabbit hunting and appears on the logo of the Clube Português de Canicultura (Portuguese Kennel Club). Within each type are two varieties: smooth-coated and wire-haired.

There are three types of Podengo: Podengo Grande, Podengo Medio and Podengo Pequeno. Loyal and fearless, Podengos are also good house guards and are amenable to training by Dog experienced people and those that enjoy primitive (unrefined, “less domesticated”) Dog behavior.The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient hunting breed whose origins can be traced back more than 5,000 years to northern Africa. Keen hunting Dogs, the Podengo has an affinity for chasing. Barking: Podengo Pequenos tend to be a bit barky, especially when they are excited or want to draw their owner’s attention to something they find interesting.Sociability (Other Pets): They are tireless hunting hounds that need to actively engage with people and other animals to stay physically and mentally fit.Reward-based techniques, using positive reinforcement rather than harsh verbal or physical corrections, makes teaching these dogs standard obedience commands a breeze. Trainability: The Podengo Pequeno is a very bright breed and is easy to train.Temperament: They are an intelligent, lively breed.Family: Courageous and a good watchdog, they are affectionate, making a good family companion.Exercise Needs: This fast and very active breed needs a lot of daily exercise, including a daily, long, brisk walk or jog.


Colors may include yellow, fawn or black with white markings. The wirehaired coat is medium-long, shaggy and coarse. The smooth coat is hard and longer than that of most sighthounds. Coat Type: The coat comes in two varieties: smooth and wire-coated.Occasionally comb and brush to remove the dead and loose hair. Grooming Needs: The Podengo Portugueso Medio needs little grooming.In profile, Podengo Pequenos are longer than they are tall and have a pronounced fore chest. The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is a small, primitive breed that resembles a stocky Chihuahua. Brought to the Iberian Peninsula over two thousand years ago by Romans and Phoenicians, these primitive Dogs have not changed much since ancient times. As an added bonus the Portuguese Podengo need little grooming 👌. All Podengo types are hardy, intelligent and lively Dogs, excelling at agility and making fine companions.
